Newcomers Evening

We have a regular newcomers evening on the second Tuesday of each month at the climbing wall at Copleston school in Ipswich. Note that they only accept payment, via their awkward website, in advance, details here.

All abilities are welcome, whether you’ve climbed before or not, just come along and say hello and we’ll get you climbing.

Please note that under-16s are not allowed to climb at Copleston unless accompanied by an adult (who is welcome to climb too, but must remain present all the time the under-16 is climbing), and under-18s climbing with the club must have a signed parental consent form.

Alternatively come along to one of our other climbing evenings. See the meets calendar, and let the secretary know to expect you. (Note: some venues, typically those with roped walls, will require you to demonstrate requisite knowledge to be allowed to climb there).

When you decide that you’d like to become a member

Joining is done in two parts – a membership form, followed by paying the membership fee.

1. First, you will need to register – contact the club secretary who will let you know how. If you are under 18 then:
   1. You will also need a parent or guardian to fill in the consent form below and send it to the IMC Secretary
   2. We would advise the parent or guardian to read the BMC’s advice booklet Young People Climbing, Hill Walking, Mountaineering: A Parent’s Guide, which is available to buy or download. The IMC have adopted the British Mountaineering Council’s Child Protection Policy so we have a child protection officer who you may contact if you have any questions.
2. Second, please contact the IMC Treasurer for payment details for the membership fee. We prefer this is by bank transfer, but may be able to accommodate cash payment at one of our Newcomers Evenings which are held at Copleston wall on the second Monday of each month (please contact the Treasurer first to check they’ll be there). Membership for 2026 is:
   1. £35 for Adults
   2. £29 for Students
   1. £27 for Under-18 or unemployed members
   2. £0 for an Under-11 (if under the responsibility of club member who is a parent, grandparent or legal guardian)

Membership of the IMC includes affiliate membership of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) with the advantages of its insurance scheme (see the BMC website for details). Members’ details are held in a database, and are supplied to the British Mountaineering Club as a condition of membership.
