Gear Shop Traverse (***, first ascent unknown)

A route full of character, established wet weather classic. Start early to avoid queuing. Sporting & usually crowded. The opportunity to traverse off route is ample; though once committed, most parties usually strive on. Due to the breadth of its many variations, the route is usually attempted by a spectrum of abilities. Approach is best made directly although the route can be reached from banks on either side. Easy ground leads to an exposed scramble best protected by moving together.

Most sections can be tackled in various sequences and at some points wide ledges often accommodate on-lookers. On the sparser sections, free climbing is not recommended. Points of aid are used by most parties, particularly the popular flexible friend. Intrepid soloists have on occasion resisted using these aids and have topped out to great acclaim, particularly the pioneers I.M Skint and I.A.M Tight.

The trade route is extremely polished with most people slipping at least once, usually on the notorious 'Sales' pitch and 'New Release' sections.

Surviving this magnificent route with resolve entirely intact is quite rare. For most it is an act of resolve breaking that might be described as character building. Taken in parts, the route is not particularly demanding but its position and aspect combined with multiple pitches has taken the best out of many groups. Some are left seeing red, gibbering, and cursing the day they found pub darts too tame, and generally suffering from exposure. A sleeping giant to which many parties feel deeply indebted.
