August BH in the lakes
Organised by: John & Suzanne Bloomfield
Details: Fancy a long weekend in the Lakes.
This will be a “Do what you like” sort of meeting.
Great opportunity for fell walking, scrambling and climbing in the Borrowdale Valley.
Camping is at Hollows Farm at Grange-in-Borrowdale
Grid reference OL4 248165
Post code CA12 5UQ
www.hollowsfarm.co.uk
Good loos and showers and most importantly dog friendly.
Be prepared to make your own evening entertainment as there is no pub in Grange.
The nearby Scafell Hotel has the Riverside Bar that does good bar meals, this is short drive away, or an interesting 45 min walk and stagger back along the river and through the woods (highly recommended). But on a balmy “summer evening” what could be better than gathering around for bit of alfresco eating and a few tinnies.
Please let us know your interest asap, and for co-ordinating of car sharing if you have space or require a lift.
See you there

Beginners meet 2010
Organised by: Martin Hore
Details: Our annual start of the year beginners' meet: On this trip new members of the IMC are teamed-up with more experienced members to introduce them to outside climbing.
Climbing harnesses and helmets can be supplied if I know in good time beforehand to get it organised, although it would be a good idea to have your own climbing shoes. All other climbing gear such as ropes, hardware etc will be provided by club members. You will need to be self sufficient for your accommodation (tent!), sleeping bag, cooking gear etc.
Camping will be at Hardhurst Farm, near Hope, Derbyshire. For those of you who have never attended this meet, we usually travel up on the Friday afternoon/evening so we can be a bit more organised on the Saturday morning. The site is situated directly behind a good food pub (The Travellers Rest) for your evening meal and there is a good cafe on site for breakfast.
See description of the area here
Please note that if you are hoping to get a meal at the pub, you need to find a table first and then get your order in before 9pm. It does get very busy so you need to consider that if you arrived after say 8pm, all the tables might be taken and then it could be a lottery as to whether you can get seated in time. Alternatively there are more good food pubs in neighbouring Hathersage (The Little John and The Scotsmans Pack) and an Indian restaurant/takeaway, and in Hope there are more pubs and a Chinese restaurant/takeaway.
If you are interested in attending please get in contact with me as soon as possible so that I can book spaces.

Swanage climbing
Organised by: Steve Culverhouse
Details: sport or trad climbing on the Swanage Cliffs:
The trip comes with a small 'health warning'. The trad cliffs have excellent climbing but are not a good beginners area. There's barely more than one day's worth of easy climbs, and most of these require an abseil approach; otherwise it's pretty much Very Severe and above. Folks need to be experienced in sea cliff climbing at this standard, or teamed up with someone who's agreed to show them the ropes.
The sport areas are much more accessible - no abseils required. There is a small selection of sport crags near Swanage itself and a much wider selection of crags & routes just under an hour away at Portland.
If you are interested in coming along, but would like to be put in touch with others for shared transport or climbing partners, then please let me know.
As usual, we'll be staying at Tom's Field campsite in Langton Matravers.

Peaks Climbing
Organised by: Andy Hansler
Details: I am organising the IMC trip to the Peak District on 12 / 13 August. The plan is to stay at Hardhurst Farm, Parsons Lane, Hope, Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 (grid ref 184830) Tel: 01433 620001 . Its off the A6187.
The campsite has showers and a cafe and is a 2 minute walk from the Travellers' Rest pub, serving meals etc. The location is fairly central - lots of gritstone crags are easily accessible ie Stanage Edge, Froggatt, Birchen, Burbage North, Lawrencefield, Millstone etc etc as well as limestone crags - Dovestone, Wild Cat Crag, Stoney Middleton, Horseshoe Quarry to name but a few.
As well as rock climbing, the Peaks offers great walking and mountain biking options. Hathersage offers abundant gear fondling and tea 'n cake opportunities.
Let me know asap if:
you would like to come along,
you are prepared to drive and would like to offer space in your car,
you would like a lift
and I will co-ordinate car sharing and book Hardhurst Farm.
Christina - apologies for the cheeky cut & paste.
Sat 29 - Sun 30 August 2009
Magical Mystery Meet
Organised by: Mike Hams
Details: Climbing/walking/whatever-you-like in North Wales. The usual approach would be to arrive at Dolgam, however the weather forecast needs watching so I'll not set this in stone yet. Hopefully we'll have an idea by Thursday and I'll update then. Get in touch and I'll sort lift shares and hopefully be able to put the un-paired in touch. Eastern Grit is unlikely to happen though as far as I'm concerned, it's a bank holiday we should head elsewhere.
Sat 01 - Sun 02 August 2009

Sat 20 - Sun 21 June 2009
Wye Valley
Organised by: Martin Hore
Details: Climbing on the limestone of the beautiful Wye Valley.
A good range of traditional climbing is available (though it's probably best at Hard Severe and above) and there are also two sport crags to go at (F5 upwards) plus good walking and sightseeing opportunities.
Camping is at Cherry Orchard Farm, Newland, a basic site set in a pleasant side valley with an excellent pub just 10 minutes stroll away.
A newish Climbers Club guidebook to the Lower Wye Valley is available and a free downloadable extract to Wynd Cliff , a crag that hasn't yet seen an IMC visit as far as I am aware - looks interesting.
Sat 06 - Sun 07 June 2009
North/West Peaks climbing
Organised by: Steve Culverhouse
Details: Climbing in the Peak district. Final venue still to be sorted but if weather's fine we'll be camping at Crowden (for crags such as Laddow, Shining Clough, Standing Stones - all recommended by the way) or if weather more iffy Upper Hulme (for the Roaches, Hen cloud, Ramshaw, Castle Naze etc.)
Drop me a line if you're interested
Sat 23 - Mon 25 May 2009
Borrowdale Spring Bank Holiday meet
Organised by: Ian Thurgood
Details: All grades of climbing in the fantastic Borrowdale valley along with excellent walking, scrambling, mountain biking etc etc there's even a spot of Via Ferrata to be had at Honister Slate Mine just up the road!
We'll be camping at Chapel house Farm in Stonethwaite. No booking required but if you're interested in coming I'd like to know please, particularly if you're after a lift share or climbing partner. There are reasonable facilities at the campsite (2 or 3 showers and loos) and two pubs within walking distance. Many crags and lots of good walking and scrambling nearby, some of it direct from the campsite. Good crags within a mile or two are Raven Crag (Corvus anyone?) & Sergeant Crag slabs - both walking distance, Shepherd Crag (lots of classics at all grades), Black Crag (home of Troutdale Pinnacle, the best Severe in the lakes?), another Raven Crag, The Bowderstone (great bouldering I gather) & Goat Crag. Only slightly further are Napes Needle, Great Gable, Kern Knotts, Castle Rock of Triermain and innumerable other spots. See here for more info on the climbing options.
There is also rumours of certain quintegenarians hijacking one evening to mark their auspicious occasions!
If the forecast is really woeful then this meet may be re-arranged elsewhere - but it would have to be damn bad!
View Chapel House Farm in a larger map
The campsite entrance is left off the B5289 (unless we're in the overflow field which is on the right!) just S of the Stonethwaite crossroads.
Sat 23 - Mon 25 May 2009
Splitters Sports Meet
Organised by: Andy Hansler
Details: For anyone who can't make the Lakes trip I'm planning a long weekend of sport climbing and bouldering in the Peak District for the upcoming bank holiday Monday...
Campsite will be the usual suspect, Hardhurst Farm. The sports venues I'm suggesting are Horseshoe Quarry and Harpur Hill during the day with some evening bouldering anyone wants to join me.
Whilst there are some easier climbs you would ideally need to be leading 5+ / 6a to get the most out of the venues.
All interested parties contact me.
Sat 16 - Sun 17 May 2009

May Day at Pembroke
Organised by: Martin Hore
Details: Nothing daunted by 2008's washout we're trying again for May Day at Pembroke...
Camping at St Petrox on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. They don't take bookings for tents but accept all comers (anyone wanting an electric hook-up for a camper van should phone 01646 683980). Dogs are welcome, provided kept on short leads. The campsite is handy for the St Govan's and Range East cliffs (a couple of miles to the St Govan's car park), has reasonable facilities and friendly owners, but has no pub within easy walking distance.
As usual the trip comes with a small 'health warning'. The South Pembroke cliffs have excellent climbing but are not a good beginners area. There's barely more than one day's worth of easy climbs, and some of these require an abseil approach; otherwise it's pretty much Hard Severe and above. Folks need to be experienced in sea cliff climbing at this standard, or teamed up with someone who's agreed to show them the ropes. If you are interested in coming along, but would like to be put in touch with others for shared transport or climbing partners, then please let me know. For non-climbers, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is within easy reach, and there are easier climbs on the North coast (30 miles away) though some areas are subject to bird bans in early May.
Please let me know if you are intending to join us; also whether you would like me to book you in for food at the Stackpole Inn on one or both of Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Slideshow - Climbing in the Midnight Sun - Two Steves and one Carol in
Organised by: El Presidente
Details: Those of you who attended February's slideshow would be aware that we encountered some noise pollution (that is perhaps the fairest way to describe karaoke at the Lloyds Tavern).

Fri 22 - Mon 25 August 2008
Northumberland/NE England
Organised by: Pete Krug
Details: Actual campsite and venue not yet decided but since there's a new guidebook it would be rude not to........
Madame Pres, my Good Lady Wife and indeed the x-Pres himself have been
trying to to keep Northumberland (the real North of England to those
that think those southern jessies of Yorkshire represent t'North of
England) a secret but those ratbags at Rockfax have spilt the beans so
we are going there at the Bank holiday.
I have at long last found an IMC style campsite and what a place it is -
Alnwick (remember you must pronounce it Arlnwick) Rugby Club! They have
a turn up and pitch campsite somewhere on their grounds (charging from £
5 per night). You cannot believe how much time I have spent trying to
find this place! I assume it is dog-friendly so Mounty and Pippa are
free to join in. The website provides more details - www.alnwickrugby.com
We will be well situated for getting to the northern crags such as Kyloe
and Bowden doors and indeed Simonside and the other Coquet Valley crags.
But Northumberland is so much more than climbing. There is great walking
and mountain-biking to be had and some brilliant beaches (maybe we can
organise a barbie) not too far away. Arlnwick has a castle that will be
familar to those afficionadoes of the Parry Hotter filums and there are
many other castles and places to visit so you can bring your families
along knowing that they can be entertained whilst you are out on the crag.
As I said the campsite is a turn up kinda place so just come along but
it would be helpful if you could let me know if you are coming along. If
anyone is in need of a lift please let me know and I will try and find a
driver.
Cheers
Peter (on behalf of the Northumberland Tourist Board)

Yorkshire
Organised by: Peter & Louise Krug
Details: I have been deputised by the good lady wife to organise the Yorkshire
Meet. I have just booked a few slots at Manor House Farm Caravan Site so
let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in attending.
We have been here before and it is good site very close to Brimham
Rocks. A bit dear at £ 8 a night for a one man tent, £ 15 a night for a
two man tent or £ 20 a night for a family tent. I have had no end of
trouble trying to find a campsite which is either not fully booked up or
which will take groups and the slight hitch is that this one won't
accept dogs (sorry Pippa, Mo(u)nty and Bruce).
Excursion to the pub is quite exciting across some stepping stones when
you find them.
Link to the campsite is below
> > http://www.campinguk.com/manorhouse.htm
Directions: Situated on the B6165 Ripley to Pateley Bridge road between
Burnt Yates and Summerbridge (on left hand side and down a concrete
track if memory serves).

Climbing - Peak Grit
Organised by: Simon Chandler
Details: Several of us are headed up to the Peaks this weekend for some climbing. Martin S has booked camping at Hardhurst farm for 8-10 small tents, so it looks like we're heading there. The weather forecast is not looking great (showery) - but I need ROCK!!!
Sat 07 - Sun 08 June 2008
North Wales
Organised by: Ian Thurgood
Details: Camping at Nant Peris opposite the Vaynol Arms. There is no need to book this site, which has limited but perfectly OK toilet/shower facilities. We usually try to get on the lower (first) field which, although closer to the road, is generally quieter than the top field - not to mention vital seconds nearer the Vaynol!
Stuff to do includes climbing in Llanberis Pass (walking distance), Ogwen, Tremadog (approx 45mins drive) even the slate mines of Llanberis if you're that way inclined!; great walking (a quieter route to the top of The Glyders from this side); mountain biking (not too far from Coed-y-Brenin) and is limited only by your imagination!
Sat 24 - Mon 26 May 2008
Spring Bank Borrowdale meet
Organised by: Steve Culverhouse
Details: Climbing and walking in the Borrowdale valley in the Lake District.
We'll be staying at Stonethwaite campsite a few miles South of Keswick.
Borrowdale is one of the Lake's best valleys for rock climbing with routes of all grades easily accessible from the campsite. The area is also very convenient for walking, with mountains like Scafell, Great End and Great Gable accessible from the village of Seathwaite further down the Borrowdale valley.
Please contact me if you're interested in joining the trip.
Sat 17 - Sun 18 May 2008
Beginners Meet
Organised by: Dave Tonks
Details: Our annual start of the year beginners' meet: On this trip new members of the IMC are teamed-up with more experienced members to introduce them to outside climbing. We also provide climbing equipment (helmet, harness, etc.) so that new members can give outdoor climbing a try before having to buy gear themselves.
Camping will be at Hardhurst Farm, near Hope, Derbyshire. For those of you who have never attended this meet, we usually travel up on the Friday afternoon/evening so we can be a bit more organised on the Saturday morning.
Most climbing gear will be supplied although it would be a good idea to have your own climbing shoes. I will have spare harnesses and helmets but you will need to let me know if you want to borrow them beforehand. You will need to supply your own tent, sleeping bag and cooking gear if you intend on catering for yourself although the site is situated directly behind a good food pub (The Travellers Rest) for your evening meal and there is a cafe on site for breakfast.
Please note that if you are hoping to get a meal at the pub on the Friday evening, you need to find a table first and then get your order in before 9pm.
To book a space its best to phone me on 07789 226144 or you can email, using the link above.

May Day Pembroke meet
Organised by: Guy Reid
Details: Details: Slighty more hard core climbing in a fantastic setting.
Please let me know if you are intending to join us (guy@falconhurst.com); also whether you would like me to book you in for food at the Stackpole Inn on one or both of Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Scotland walking & Climbing
Organised by: Mike Hams
Details: Winter walking and climbing in Scotland.
Tentative plans to stay at Fraoch Lodge in Boat of Garten. Costs from £16 per night to £20 per night depending on food requirements. Closer to the Cairngorms than Newtonmore.
I have sent a booking in for 3 people, until I receive confirmation from the Lodge no money is payable. Booking is for 4 nights from 27 February to allow for a bed on the night of arrival for any early birds.
Ok here is the final lowdown on Fraoch Lodge. We have 4 confirmed B&B spaces at the lodge, there are a couple of unconfirmed spaces still available, these will involve a move out to another establishment on Friday & Saturday to make way for course participants. First come first served on the last 2 spots then we may have to look at other sleeping arrangements.
Apparently there are more of you who want to join in. Weekend accommodation in and around the Cairngorms is difficult so you do need to get your decision made soon.

Cheddar Gorge - Climbing and/or Caving
Organised by: Simon Chandler
Details: Climbing in the fabulous Chedder Gorge and - for those who are interested - caving under the Mendips. I've made a provisional booking for 15 in the MNRC caving hut. This is a great place to stay at this time of year when climbing, and particularly caving, since it's warm, dry and has showers. Click here for details of this trip, including advice about clothing and equipment for caving. Note that the date has changed from the original plan.
Sat 22 - Sun 23 September 2007
Swanage
Organised by: Steve Culverhouse
Details: A favourite venue for many and slightly more hard core climbing. Also a chance to sample sport climbing, if that's your bag, at Portland.
Camping is usually at Tom's Field in Langton Matravers
Sat 08 - Sun 09 September 2007
Beginners' Follow-on Meet, Western Peaks
Organised by: Ian Thurgood
Details: A slight change of venue for this trip giving us a chance to visit some of the classics of The Roaches and Hen Cloud, and for newer members to hone their skills.
Camping is to be at Overdale, Lode Lane, Alstonefield where facilities are adequate for a weekend trip but do not include showers! However, plenty of hot water for a rub down! Costs are: tents £3 pppn, caravans & motorhomes (no electric hook up) £6 for up to 2 persons or £3 pppn if more than 2 occupants. Good climbing is to be found nearby on Staffordshire/Western Peak gritstone or natural and quarried Limestone.
Directions. From south, one suggested route is to take the A50 jct off M1 then follow A515 through Ashbourne towards Buxton, then take minor road left to Alstonefield through Milldale. Caravans/trailers might find it easier to go a few miles further north to the B5054 then left at Hulme End to Alstonefield. If approaching from Milldale, the field entrance is on your right after the steep hill. If you see the house name sign (Overdale) or the right turn to the YHA camping barn, you’ve gone too far and need to turn round!
Multimap link
The site is about 5 minutes walk from the pub (The George) in Alstonefield. Those wanting to eat in The George would be best advised to book in advance on 01335 310205.
If you have never attended one of these meets, the idea is to team experienced climbers with less experienced to give either a taster of what it’s like to climb outdoors or to help you improve various skills and techniques. However, it can make my job easier if some of you have already met and I will try to accommodate any wishes to climb with specific people as much as possible.
We usually travel up on the Friday afternoon/evening so we can be a bit more organised on the Saturday morning - at least that’s the theory! - and do our best to maximise bodies per vehicle. When responding, please let me know if you are willing to drive your own vehicle and the number of spaces available or if you will need a lift.
Please let me know if you would like to go on the list and, if a beginner/improver, an idea of your climbing experience to date and what climbing gear you have/would need to borrow. Established IMC members please let me know if you can help for the weekend and whether you consider yourself leader or assistant.
I think that’s it for now, but any questions either email to thurgoodi@willis.com or call/text on 07929 229670.

A week in the Lakes
Organised by: Martin Stevens
Details: I'm off to the Lakes with a few others for a week at the end of August, encompassing the Bank Holiday weekend.
Plans at the moment include 'Southwest Lakes' and a couple of days climbing on Pillar (Mike tells me there are, ''must do' Classic Ticks'), possibly based at the Black Sail YHA although the rest of the trip we'll almost certainly camp.
As ever, an 'As You Like' meet - the Lakes area of course offers something for almost everyone and non-climbers are welcome to come along.
Note - the start day of Sat 25th is merely because I've run out of leave so can't make a Friday night getaway as I have to work on the Saturday until about lunchtime - that needn't stop others travelling earlier.
Regards,
Martin.
Fri 24 - Mon 27 August 2007

Beginners' Multipitch weekend - North Wales
Organised by: Caroline Goldsworthy
Details: We're holding this trip a little earlier than usual (closest weekend to the Longest Day to be precise) so that we can take advantage of the greatest amount of daylight!!
The idea of the trip is to introduce newer climbers to the excitement that is multipitch climbing.
Camping will be at Dol-Gam (between Betws Y Coed and Capel Curig) and as this is a working farm, our four legged friends are not able to attend.
Sat 09 - Sun 10 June 2007
Beginners' Meet - Peak District
Organised by: Dave Tonks
Details: On this trip new members of the IMC are teamed-up with more experienced members to introduce them to outside climbing. We also provide climbing equipment (helmet, harness, etc.) so that new members can give outdoor climbing a try before having to buy gear themselves.
Camping will be at Hardhurst Farm, near Hope, Derbyshire. For those of you who have never attended this meet, we usually travel up on the Friday (8th) afternoon/evening so we can be a bit more organised on the Saturday morning.
Please let me know if you intend on coming as soon as you possibly can as time is running short and I need to start making my list!
Sat 26 - Mon 28 May 2007
Springbank in Lakes
Organised by: Steve Culverhouse
Details: It has become something of a tradition that one of our members falls off of Springbank during the course of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, and why should we interfere with tradition?
There's climbing of all grades from Diff to ESilly and also plenty of other things to do if you don't want to climb. Walking, mountain biking, paddling in lakes and lovely tea-shops.
Campsite will be at Chapel Stile. See details of the site and a map. There is an excellent pub within 1/2 a mile of the site although it does get busy over the weekend so you may not want to rely on it for evening meals. There are other pubs (and, of course, Ambleside) a short drive away.
Some people will be staying on for an extra day on Tuesday, and a few other for all week.
Sat 05 - Mon 07 May 2007
Pembroke
Organised by: Martin Hore
Details: Slighty more hard core climbing in a fantastic setting.
Folks need to be experienced in sea cliff climbing at this standard, or teamed up with someone who’s agreed to show them the ropes.
Please let me know if you are intending to join us(elena.hore@tinyworld.co.uk); also whether you would like me to book you in for food at the Stackpole Inn on one or both of Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Easter 2007
Organised by: Martin Stevens
Details: I have booked a bunkhouse at Thorpe Farm (in Hathersage, Derbyshire) for Easter 2007, arrival Thursday 5th April, departure Monday 9th April.
As ever it's an 'as you like' meet - I'm just organising accomodation although I'll try to coordinate transport if required.
The bunkhouse is well placed for Stanage and the gritstone edges. There's also walking, mountain-biking, gear fondling, pubs, tea-shops and general touristing - whatver you like.
I'd like a firm commitment by 14th January, please. This will be best served by a £20 note with your name on it. You can contact me via my details on the 'Contacts' page.

Climbing at The Castle
Organised by: Simon Chandler
Details: A full day climbing at The Castle Climbing Centre, Green Lanes, London, N4 2HA.
Unfortunately I can't now go to this (family commitments) and only 2 other people have shown interest for this day. If you would like to team up with them get in touch with me - Simon.
See The Castle webpage for details of costs and how to get there. It 'aint cheap (about £10 each to get in + transport costs) but it's a great place. On a Sunday the centre opens at 10am and closes 7pm. Car parking is limited so I advise getting there early and sharing cars wherever possible. Under 18s must be accompanied at all times by someone who holds membership of The Castle centre (two U18s per member), so make sure this is arranged before you go.

North Wales Multi-Pitch Weekend
Organised by: Martin Hore
Details:
Dear All
As last year, I've volunteered to co-ordinate the above weekend on 8 - 9 July. Hopefully, unlike last year, I'll actually be able to be there this time!
The idea is to give less experienced folk a chance to try some of the classic multi-pitch rock climbing in North Wales in the company of members of the club who are experienced multi-pitch leaders. For those not familiar with the climbing in North Wales, there are almost unlimited opportunities ranging from 7 or 8 pitch mountain routes on Tryfan (Diffs and V Diffs) or Cloggy (VS and above), friendly beginners' climbs at Idwal Slabs (routes of up to 5 pitches from Diff to Severe) and 2 or 3 pitch outcrop routes in the Llanberis Pass (all grades). The weather can limit options, but if it's raining in the mountains, it's usually possible to climb at Tremadog - a sea level outcrop - again with 2 - 3 pitch routes of most grades.
It's an 'all-comers' weekend up to a point. We need to achieve a balance in the numbers of less and more experienced people to make it work. Also I think it would be sensible if folk already had at least some experience of single pitch climbing, for example on the club beginners weekend. For the mountain routes, hill-walking kit (boots, waterproofs) is required to reach the crags, but the outcrop routes can be reached in trainers. Otherwise, it's normal personal rock climbing kit - helmets definitely being a good idea.
When I've an idea of numbers I'll book camping, and help to co-ordinate transport. For camping, I suggest the Snowdon House site in Nant Peris, or the normal site at Capel Curig - the former is more dog-friendly, I believe.
Please let me know if you would like to / be able to join this weekend. If I don't know you well enough to know the answer already, please indicate whether you consider yourself to be either (1) a relatively inexperienced climber outdoors, or (2) a reasonably experienced single pitch climber, including single pitch leading, but not an experienced multi-pitch leader, or (3) an experienced multi-pitch leader, willing to spend a weekend showing others the ropes.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Very few members of the IMC are qualified instructors. If you wantmore structured or formal climbing lessons it would be best to contact one of the many available teaching organisations, such as Plasy Brenin or Outward Bound.

Dave
Please note the Ipswich Mountaineering Club is not a teaching institution. The Beginners Meet is an occasion when many of the club's more experiencedclimbers pass on their experiences gleaned from, in some cases, many yearsof climbing to those who are less experienced in the grand tradition ofclimbing. Very few of us are qualified except through experience on therock and overcoming mishaps and surviving epics over the years. If you wantmore structured or formal climbing lessons it would be best to contact Plasy Brenin, Outward Bound or some of the other teaching organisations.
Further info from previous beginners meets ...
We meet at Hardhurst Farm near Hope on the Friday evening. From the M1 Junction 29 take the A617 to Chesterfield, the A619 (sign posted Bakewell)to Baslow. When you get to Baslow, take the A623 to Calver (do not continue following thesigns to Bakewell). At the crossroads with traffic lights turn right on to the B6001 and keepfollowing signs to Hathersage (there is an easily missable left turning at Grindleford). Youarrive at a T junction at Hathersage, turn left (A6187) and follow road for about 3 or 4 mileslooking out for 'The Travellers Rest' pub on your right. Turn right immediately and Hardhurst Farmis on your right behind the pub.(If there doesn't appear to be anyone from the club at the campsite then you know where to find us!!)
The camping site fee is £4.00 per person, per night. There is a cafe on site if you don't want tocook your own breakfast and we usually eat at the pub in the evening.
Hardhurst Farm is close to Stanage and is right behind the Travellers Rest pubwhich offers good food and good beer. The campsite is flat. Admittedly the site does not have as many facilities as some other campsites, and is close to the Sheffield-Manchester train line - but hey nothing is perfect!

Hot Rock - Calpe
Organised by: Caroline Goldsworthy
Details:
Hot Rock - Calpe
I am planning a hot rock trip to Calpe, in April 2005 (2-9th to be precise). Costs are likely to be in the region of £100 for flights and £100-125 for theaccommodation, in addition to this there would be car hire costs and food sinceI'm planning on booking self-catering accommodation.
Anyone interested, please let me know ASAP so that I can start getting somewherebooked. I've been looking on a few websites today and there are some lovelyvillas out there.
The trip would be primarily a climbing one but that does not mean to say thatthose wishing to come out and mountain bike or walk or even just sample thedelights of Benidorm would not be welcome. Actually I am told that the old town of Benidorm is quite beautiful but I've never found it!!!! But I'm sure it's inthere somewhere.
Anyway let interest be registered. The new Costa Blanca guidebook is due outany day now which happily coincides with this trip. http://www.rockfax.com/publications/books/item.php?id=86
Come on guys - the Penon awaits....
Love
Caroline

Scotland, March 2005
Organised by: Peter Krug
Details:
The cunning plan with the intent of maximising theamount of time spent in Scotland basically involves flying from Stansted toEdinburgh by Easyjet onWednesday 9 March 2005 (about 21.00ish) and returning on the Sunday 13March 2005 (19.00 ish) flight. The current cost is £70.98 but this hasgone up significantly in the last 24 hrs. Therefore, if you are interestedI would like a firm commitment by next Tuesday (18 March 2005) and I willgo ahead and book the flights (please provide full details which meansname, rank and serial number) as cheap as possible. The above price is NOTguaranteed!
If you change your minds you will have to pay up if we can't find asubstitute or cancel the ticket. Sorry it's a tough world and I work atWillis which means a weekend away in Scotland is an extravagance (basicallyI can't afford not to get the money off you!). You can off course book yourown flight!
On top of this we will need to hire cars which will basically add about £40 (assuming four passengers) per head plus petrol (and insurance).
Once we have landed the current intention would be to stay in theNewtonmore area which is ideally situated to explore the Cairngorms or theWestern Highlands i.e. lots of hills to climb or ice-climbing opportunities(should it eventually snow). Believe it or not I am looking at wimpsaccommodation (bunkhouses, hostels etc) which I reckon will set you backabout £60 (that's a guess). However, if you are willing to camp .......
If you are unable to commit at this stage all is not necessarily lostbecause we might be able to fit you in at a later stage but you willprobably have to pay more for the flight and indeed there may be otheradditional costs to be incurred in terms of changing cars etc. Ideally Iwould like a commitment as soon as possible so that I can make thenecessary arrangements.
Come on you know you want to!
Cheers

North Wales, February 2005
Organised by: Steve
Details:
I'm organising a North Wales trip for the weekend of 12/13 Feb - ideal for thatromantic valentine weekend! We will be staying in the hut at Tremadog, underneath the crag and over the road from Eric's Cafe. If anyone (Hi Pete!)fancies a more hardy & cheaper option there is always camping available over theroad. The accomodation should be handy for some (very!) early rock climbing ifthe weather is kind as well as easy access to all the traditional Snowdoniaattractions.
I'm expecting the hut to cost perhaps £12-15 per person for the weekend althoughit will be dependent on numbers, camping will presumably be cheaper. I belivethere is an option to eat breakfast at Eric's (which I may well be takingup) and plenty of good pubs serving fine food and beer just a mile down the roadin Porthmadog. When I have a view of numbers I'll confirm the costs and whetheryou're still interested.
I'd like to get an early a view of numbers as possible to know whether there'senough interest to book the hut so please reply early - tentative is fine atthis stage - otherwise you may find the only option is camping!!
See you there I hope

Lake District, August 2004
Organised by: Martin Stevens
Details:
In a moment of weakeness (having been plied with beer) I agreed with El Pres. Krug that I would organise the August Bank Holiday (Sat Aug. 28th - Mon Aug. 30th) trip.
I'm suggesting the Lakes, staying at Hollows Farm, Borrowdale although those more familiar with Borrowdale might like to suggest alternatives since it's a bit of a walk to the pub from the campsite.
I'd like to book campsite space reasonably soon and leave sorthing things like travel-plans, car share etc. until nearer the time. Please let me know if you're interested and the number of people/tents etc. and I'll make a booking.
I think Ian expressed the beginners bit very well...I shall simply cut-and-paste:
If you are a beginner but don't have your own gear/rope, let me know in good time and I'll do my best to sort out loans of spare kit. There will be plenty of old hands present to give hints and tips on the use of said gear and point you in the direction of suitable routes.
However, what I can't promise or guarantee is someone to climb with - you need to take ownership of that part. If you get to one of the climbing walls, speak to people there; or post a note on the message board; or email the members list.
I'll add that an awful lot of the Lakes climbing is multi-pitch and skills above and beyond those needed for single pitching may well be required.
Borrowdale (and the Lakes) also offers a lot for the walkers, mountain bikers, gill-scramblers and dedicated tea-drinkers etc. etc. and the trip is in no way restricted to just the climbers amongst us.
I've been in touch with Hollows Farm in Borrowdale. The campsite doesn't take bookings and said, 'we rarely fill up even on Bank Holiday weekends'. The IMC website lists four other campsites in Borrowdale so finding somewhere to stay shouldn't be a problem.
Some IMC people are travelling on the evening of Tuesday 24th or the morning of Wednesday 25th to Derbyshire for a day of grit before going on to Borrowdale on Thursday morning. Anyone interested in this plan should contact me and I'll put you in touch.
I am also heading to the Peaks before the lakes, if anyone is interested in climbing on the 21st - 24th Aug please let me know.

Western Grit, July 2004
Organised by: Ian Thurgood
Details:
The plan so far is for the weekend of 10th/11th July, camping at Homestead Farm,Upper Hulme - approx 1 km off the A53 between Leek and Buxton. For those whohaven't stayed there before, it is a basic site - just a field about 250 m fromthe farm itself. Loos and hot/cold water are available at the farm and there haseven been a functioning shower in the past! The advantage of such simplicity isthat it only costs £1 per person per night, plus £1 per tent per night with nosupplements for cars or pets (so Monty will be in the posse!). Not to mentionthe fact that it's only 15/20 minutes walk from Hen Cloud and The Roaches - andabout 10 minutes from the Rock Inn. The environmentally sensitive could evenwalk to Ramshaw Rocks a little further along the A.53.
The weekend is billed as a gritstone extravaganza and there's a plentiful spreadof grades for all to go at. However, the usual Peak limestone venues are only ashort drive away (for those that can be bothered)!
Whilst the club does everything it can to encourage and support newcomers to thesport, and we'll endeavour to put bums on seats to minimise costs, emissiongasses etc, you should also be aware that this is not an IMC 'beginners' or'late comers/follow up' meet. If you don't have a rack/ropes/climbing buddy butwould like to come along, please try to partner beforehand with someone who hasthe necessary equipment (oo-er missus!) and is willing to climb with you.
Interested? If so Ian Thurgood or Christina Ennis (details in the contacts list ).

N0ughties Whitsun Weekend, May 2004
Organised by: Mike
Details: >
'n0ughties meet', what's that all about? This year IMC stalwarts El Pres, Steve C and Cathy are all celebrating birthdays with a '0' in them. Hence, a n0ughties weekend is planned for the Whitsun bank holiday weekend to help them celebrate these auspicious dates.
The intention is to camp at the National Trust site in Langdale, with its choice of climbing, walking and cycling. A little further afield are gear fondling opportunities aplenty if the weather is inclement. Oh, did I mention the traditional hangout of the climbers bar at The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel? Its just a short walk from the camp site.
Campsite costs are £4/person/night, £2.50/car/night and £1/dog/night.
I'm intending to book the campsite for all the above this weekend, unless I hear to the contrary. If you'd like to go but haven't yet got your name on the list then please let me know ASAP.
The booking has to be paid for 14 days in advance which the club will pay and then I'll collect the money to re-imburse club funds. However, this does mean if somebody subsequently drops out they still have to pay or find someone to fill their place.I realise that the meet is some weeks away but I want to be sure ofgetting the campsite booked on what is likely to be a busy weekend.
I hope to be able to book further places closer to the time if required.
There have been some mutterings about going up early/staying on for a few days. Please let me know if you plan to do this.
For some more information about the campsite, its location & facilities see http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/campsites/lakedistrict/campsites/greatlangdale.htm.

Beginner's Weekend
Organised by: Dave Tonks
Details: >
Hi all,
I've had a couple of people requesting further information on this weekend so here goes......
We meet at Hardhurst Farm near Hope on the Friday evening (14th).From the M1 Junction 29 take the A617 to Chesterfield, the A619 (sign posted Bakewell)to Baslow.
You will need your own tent and general camping gear, harness and rock shoes, waterproofs and warmclothing and that's about it. All the rest of the climbing gear will be supplied including helmets (pleaselet me know if you need to borrow a helmet).
I think the camping site fee is £4.00 per person, per night. There is a cafe on site if you don't want tocook your own breakfast and we usually eat at the pub in the evening.
My mobile phone no. is 07789 226144.
If there is anything I've missed out please ask. Either email me or ring me on 01473 211647 duringnormal working hours.
Regards
Dave
Further info from El Pres ...
For those that haven't advised availability etc. please email
As usual we shall be based in the Peak Districtand will be camping at Hardhurst Farm, which personally speaking is muchbetter than Greenhills (closer to Stanage/ right behind the Travellers Rest pubwhich offers good food and good beer/is flat) which we have used in thepast few years. I will admit that is does not have as many facilities asGreenhills and is close to the Sheffield-Manchester line but hey nothing isperfect!
Dave Tonks (big thanks) has once again volunteered to organise this year'sfrivolities and I have put in a request for better weather 'cos I am pissedoff with being pissed on over this particular weekend. If you don't ask youdon't get!
As usual there is the usual caveat which applies on these weekends which isthat most of us more experienced climbers are not qualified instructors andon this weekend we 'volunteer' our services to pass on what knowledge wehave in the old mountaineering spirit to those that have not got thisexperience. If you are looking for something more structured andprofessional I would suggest that you contact one of the many outdooractivity centres such as Plas-y-Brenin or Outward Bound who will be able tohelp you out.
Cheers

Pembrokeshire Meet
Organised by: Martin
Details:
For my sins, I've volunteered to act as meet co-ordinator for this one. Hopefully we'll have more luck with the weather than last year.
Camping will be at St Petrox on the B4319 south of Pembroke town (SR 971975). This is the site we've used for the last few years. The facilities are reasonable and the natives friendly. The downside is that it's a long walk to the pub (sober drivers required - I'll volunteer to be one), On the upside it's only 100m from the church (?). The campsite does not take bookings, but I've let them know we expect to be there.
For those of you who've not been to South Pembrokeshire before, the climbing is on extensive limestone sea cliffs, one or two pitches high, some tidal and some not tidal. It's some of the best climbing in the country, but not really suitable for beginners. Only at Saddle Head are there Diffs and V Diffs, and only enough for one day, with an abseil approach. Otherwise it's Hard Severe to E-plenty. North Pembroke offers some alternative climbing, around an hour's drive away, and there's the Pembrokeshire coast path for those who fancy some long distance walking. There are bird restrictions on some cliffs at this time of year, but still an enormous amount of quality climbing to go at.
I'll be happy to put people in touch to share transport, and also book us in to one of the local hostelries for Saturday evening (The Stackpole Inn has proved popular in the past). Otherwise it's a self-organised weekend. It's not a 'beginners' or 'all-comers' meet, so I won't be organising equipment or matching up climbing teams. Please only sign up if you're self-reliant in that respect.
Please let me know if you're planning to join us. I'm away from 8 - 18 April but will pick up messages when I return.

Folks,
I have now provisionally booked the whole of the Mill Farm camping Barn in Gosforth (near Wasdale) for the New Year jaunt. There are 12 space available at this barn. For those who've not had the pleasure of camping barns this is very basic communal accommodation usually in converted farm buildings. Facilities at Mill Farm are : Hot water, mattresses , cycle store & breakfast available in the Farm. We will be renting out the heater too but don't expect too much warmth! (the 01/02 crew will remember how cold these barns can get!). Cost will be £16 per person for the period, provided we can fill the barn.
The location is a few miles off the main A595 about 1 mile East of the village of Gosforth (http://www.gosforthvillage.co.uk) at GR 800044. There are several pubs in the village and there is Inn and B&B accommodation in the village for the Softies too. It is particularly convenient for the Wasdale and Eskdale valleys which we don't tend to get to visit very often, so I'm looking forward to bagging some new (to me) routes
I've booked the barn for the nights of Wednesday 31st December to Saturday 3rd Jan - Obviously this means travelling up on New Year's eve - if there is demand I'll happily extend the booking back a day so we can celebrate down the pub.
So, If you are interested can you please reply back to me with a view on whether you need a space in the barn or not. I will also need to inform the farmer if we want breakfast at the barn so please indicate if you want this.
Alternative B&B option: (spaces now available, £21 per night, but no fry-up for breakfast)

Orienteering
Organised by: Martin Hore
Details:
The Orienteering event is at Knettishall Heath Country Park on Sunday 12January, start times from 10.00 - 12.00.
To take part you need to be able to read a map. (Orienteering maps arewonderful creations if you've never seen one, but easy enough to read forus hill-walking types). The competitive types will run but it's notessential. Courses are of different lengths from 1.7 to 8.8 km anddifferent difficulties from very easy to as hard as I can make it! Forthose who like running but don't want the hastle of running through thebush there's a long(ish) easy course mostly on paths. However most IMCmembers who've tried orienteering in the past have opted for the challengeof one of the harder courses (though I don't recommend the longest one ifits your first outing).
Knettishall Heath is just south ofthe A1066 between Thetford and Diss, but quicker for most of us to get tofrom the A143 via Ixworth, Stanton and Barningham (follow signs to theCountry Park). The car park for the event is 500m west of the crossroads at TL 956806and will be signposted from there with a red and white orienteeringsign. Registration will be from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon and start timesfrom 10.30 to 12.30. There is an entry fee, £4 for adults, £1.50 forjuniors plus 50p for the hire of an electronic 'dibber' (see below).
The event is one in the series organised by local (ie East Anglian)orienteering clubs. This one is organised by Suffolk Orienteering Club towhich I and a number of other IMC members belong. Normally around 100 - 150club orienteers turn up at each event, together with younger competitorsfrom school or youth groups. There are always a few adult or familybeginners, for whom advice is normally available at the registration area(depending on how streched the organising club are on the day). There is noneed to register or let anyone know you're coming before the event. Justturn up on the day.
You need to bring suitable clothing for running or walking (whichever youintend to do) in the weather conditions on the day. You'll also need acompass, a mapcase or suitable poly bag to keep the map dry, a pen to copyyour course down (red is best) and a whistle (to attract attention shouldyou succumb to a sprained ankle or similar - important if you take part onyour own, less so if you go as a pair). Gaiters can be a good idea forthose who plan to run/walk straight through the undergrowth, but it's notcompulsory to do so. Orienteers have special light weight ones but standardmountain walking ones would work fine.
The courses range from very easy to as hard as the venue permits and varyin length from 1.7 to 8.4 km (crow flying distance). There is a longish(5.1km) course designed especially for adult beginners or near beginnerswho want a longer outing than the other easier courses provide. This courseis labelled 'Red'. For those new or relatively new to orienteering, butwith navigation skills honed in the mountains, I recommend one of the morechallenging courses - 'Light Green', 'Green', or 'Blue'. You make up yourmind at registration on the day where further advice will be available..
The courses are defined by a series of control points marked with red andwhite orienteering flags. The shortest course has 7 controls and thelongest 23. We now use an electronic system called 'Sport-Ident' to recordcompetitors' arrival at each control. There are two electronic components, the 'dibber' which you carry round attached to a finger, and a small blackbox which is attached to each control flag. Basically you just poke thedibber into the hole in the black box. When you have finished you downloadyour dibber at the results tent and within a few seconds (if the system isworking smoothly) you receive a print out showing your overall time and asplit time for each leg - all very clever. The computer will evendisqualify you if you've visited the controls in the wrong order - not ofgreat concern I'm sure to those just out for a fun day in the woods butimportant to those who take competing seriously.
I hope that is enough info for any of you thinking of taking part. Furtherenquiries can be made to Andrew Elliot, the club chairman, who's theOrganiser for the day on 01284 767865, or from me. My job is to plan thecourses. I've got to know the venue quite well in the last few wet weeks.Dry weather is promised on the day?!
I hope to see some familiar faces at the event!

Sardinia, Hot Rock, October 2002
Organised by: Steve Culverhouse
Details:
I'm organising a 'hot rock' trip to Sardinia over Octoberhalf-term, 19th-26th October. I've now booked acommodation so to reserve a place please contact me with your cheque-book ready. Deposit is £70, to cover acommodation costs.
Sardinia is a pretty big place and there is a wide selection ofoptions but I've booked up accommodation on the NE coast. This is one of the two main climbing areas, near sea cliffs and some large inland limestone crags. The climbing here mainly ranges from the mid 5s (~VS) upwards and is a mix of single and multi-pitch - there are a few 4s around too. There are also some almost alpine outingssuch as this 17-pitch affair! If you're not into climbing (or fancy a day off!) there are plenty of other options: The villa is 150m from the sea and we're also in the middle of Gennargentu National Park, home to some of the best walking trails in Sardinia. Cathy has a walking guide and some of the routes look quite spectacular.
We'll definitely need to hire cars both for the trip from airport to villa and to many of the crags, I'll be organising these nearer the time.
Cost should be approximately:
| Flights | £160 (See below for details) |
| Accommodation | £70 |
| Car Hire | £60 |
| Food | £30 (+evening eating out costs) |
So that's a total of just over £300 + the cost of some meals out and spending money.
Update - 2nd May 2002
- Flight Details:
- Flying with Ryanair From Stansted to Alghero
Outbound: Sat 19th October 07:20 FR230 Arrive 10.45 £69.99 1 way + taxes

Beginner's Weekend
Organised by: Ian Thurgood or Peter Krug
Details:
VENUE DECIDED - Greenhills Camping & Caravan Park, Bakewell
At long last and after some prevarication we have decided - after negotiating Greenhills down to £ 4.00 per tent per night - that this willbe the venue for the 2002 Beginner's Weekend. Anyone interested inattending either as a beginner or as an instructor please let either IanThurgood or Peter Krug know as soon as possible.
There is the usual disclaimer in that the Ipswich Mountaineering Club isnot a teaching organisation and that anyone wishing to attend must acceptthat help will be on an informal basis with those that know passing ontheir their knowledge to those that don't in the best tradition ofclimbing. Anyone wanting a more professional course should attend one ofthe many excellent courses provided by the BMC, Plas y Brenin or Reach OutFor Adventure (amonst others).
In the usual manner, we will book the campsite, arrange for additionalclimbing equipment, organize beginners and experienced climbers into smallgroups for the weekend. We can try to match 'bums' to seats in variouscars, but no guarantees. Tents, sleeping bags, food, cooking gear, etc. areup to the individual.
As for the climbing, Bakewell is centrally placed for most of the majorcrags in the Peak. Both gritstone and limestone are possible, but limestonegenerally does not offer the variety of low graded climbs that is possiblewith grit.
Where
The plan is to camp at Green Hills, just outside of Bakewell of the A6 toBuxton. Turn left off the A6, just as you leave the 40mph limit and thecampsite is on your right. Grid Reference: SK201692. Click here for a map. What to bring
You'll need the usual stuff for camping, including feeding yourself. Thereare pubs close by in Ashford and Bakewell, if you prefer to eat out in theevening. Please indicate if this is your preference as we usually need tobook in advance due to the numbers involved. Bring some form of packedlunch, as most crags are not near any shops or burger vans! Also make surethat you have an adequate supply of fluids - you never know how hot aBritish May weekend is going to be. For climbing we can provide harnessesand helmets if required, but if you have your own please bring them along.Use the same sort of clothing that you'd take for a day in the hills, butwe'd suggest you use older stuff as gritstone has a nasty habit of puttingholes in things. If you don't possess rock boots, then trainers or walkingboots will suffice. We may have to levy a small charge from all at the meetto cover the cost of hiring additional gear if necessary (yes that'severybody, regardless of whether you use the additional gear). The moreaccurately we know what to hire the lower we can make the charge. If you're interested in coming along to the beginners weekend contact Ian Thurgood or Peter Krug.

Mendips Weekend
Organised by: Simon Chandler
Details:
Here are some details about a trip to the Mendips that has been planned for the weekend of 16-17 March.
The Mendips is the area of Somerset, that includes Wells, Cheddar,Burrington, Charterhouse and Priddy. Weather permitting, we'll climbin Cheddar Gorge on Saturday, then go caving in Swildon's Hole onSunday morning. If the weather's bad we'll just cave!
Accommodation
I've booked 9 bunks in the guest dormatory at the MendipNature Research Council (MNRC) hut for the nights of 15th and 16th March 2002 (i.e., theFriday and Saturday nights). I'm sure we could book more bunks at a later date if anyone elsebecomes interested in joining us. Obviously, the earlier we contact the MNRC the more chance wehave of getting another bunk. The MNRC hut has three separate dormitories, all equipped with three-tier bunks. One dorm isfor members only; the other two (a 15 bed and a 6 bed) are available for booking by guestgroups. Sole occupancy of either bunk room cannot be guaranteed unless all bunks are booked andpaid for.
In the hut there's a cooking area, showers, a big lounge with comfey chairsand a four-sided open fire. Two pubs are within easy walking distance of the hut.
Accomodation fees are £3.50 each per night, or £2.50 if you'd prefer to camp.
Gear
Expect to get wet and muddy! However, the temperature never drops below 4degrees, so energetic scrambling through the cave tends to make you quitewarm. Typical caving gear is demonstrated by the glamorous models shown on theright. In my early days of caving I wore some old army trousers and jacket(left), over something that stayed warm when wet - wool or fleece. That was adequate, but a betteroption is an oversuit/furry-suit combination, as modelled by Louise. The all-in-one PVC oversuit doesn't keep you dry, but is tough and keeps some of the mud off the 'furry-suit', which is worn underneath. The furry suit is an all-in-one fleece jacket and leggings, rather like a boiler suit or babygrow. We'll be able to hire oversuits and furry-suits from Suffolk CC via Martin. When caving in the Mendip the climbing isn't technical, so the best footwareis a pair of wellington boots. Again, these won't keep your feet dry, but aretough.
We''ll hire the helmets and lamp from a shop in Wells called 'Bat Products'.The hired lamp comes with awebbing belt from which the battery pack is suspended. A steel karabinerthrough this is used to connect you to the safety rope when going up and downladders. The rope goes through a pully that's bolted to the rock, and a steelfigure-8 is used as the belay device. No pro (nuts, etc) needs to be takenunderground since you use the in-situ bolts. Most of the climbing is easy -even for non-climbers. For Mendip caving you don't need a harness.
Some people like to wear a wetsuit, but I find them a bit too hot, bulky andrestrictive when crawling. I do, however, wear wet-suit socks inside mywellies. In this picture I'm wearing some neoprene knee pads, which take theedge off of long crawls over rock. If you've got some of these bring themalong. Some people also like to wear rubber gloves (e.g., Marigolds), but Idon't like the way they tend to fill with water.
Last Minute News
Clothing
I've now picked up caving oversuits and furry suits for everyone.Martin and I picked them out last night. You don't need to wear anyother clothing under a furry suit, but I usually have an extra layerof t-shirt or thermal vest. Just in case the caving clothing isn't theright size for you (or you don't like it!) bring along some clothing that you don't mind getting soaking wet and muddy. Martin has askedfor the caving clothing to be washed before returning it to SuffolkCC, so I'll be asking each of you to take it home and wash it yourself. There's a hire charge of £3 for each suit (furry + over)that's used.Footwear
You need to bring along your own footwear. I strongly recommendWellington boots, mainly because they provide sufficient traction andprotect your ankles from accidental bumps against boulders and rocks. They WILL NOT keep the water out! If you don't have any wellies, useanything that you don't mind getting soaking wet throughout and muddy. It's a good idea to avoid shoes or boots with hooks or a large tongue- which will cause problems when they get caught in the caving ladder.Handwear (optional)
Some people wear rubber gloves (e.g., marigolds) when caving. I prefer to use a type of gardening glove that's made of wool (or a synthetic substitute) and is covered with a lattice of rubber. This keep my hands warm but has reasonable grip. Bring your own gloves if you wish.Kneewear (optional)
If you have some kneepads (either neoprene or the plastic type) then consider bringing them. They can be useful in reducing the bruising to your knees from the crawling. Certainly not essential though.Lamps and Helmets (essential)
You don't need to bring these, but it's worth saying that I've booked lamps and helmets for everyone from Bat Products in Wells. We'll pick them up on Saturday morning. The lamps come with a webbing belt from which the battery is hung. You clip a lifeline into the belt when using the caving ladder.Other info
Here's some other info that can be downloaded from the web.A description of the MNRC hut's facilities, and how to find the hut, can be downloaded from here.
A large scale roadmap showing the location of the MNRC hut relative to Bristol and Bath can be foundhere.
A smaller scale map showing the location of the MNRC hut can be foundhere. The main thing toaim for is a place called 'Green Ore', which is marked on mostroadmaps. It's on the A39 between Bristol and Wells. The most interesting (only?) thing about Green Ore is the pub, which is probably a good meeting place on Friday evening. i.e., if there's nobody at the hut then try the pub.
If the weather forces us to cave on both days then we can do Swildons Hole on one day - some wet fun - and Goatchurch Cavern and Lionel's Hole on the second - for some muddy route-finding fun. Seemaps of Goatchurch Cavern and Lionel's Hole. I've made two laminated copies of these maps so that, if we do them, then we can split into two groups.
